We took a quick little overnight hike this weekend and were blessed with good weather, amazing views and hardly a soul on the trail.
The weather forecast was for "50% severe thunderstorms." We couldn't decide if that meant 50% of the time the thunderstorms would be severe or if there was a 50% chance of severe thunderstorms. We hit the trail anyway, parked at the Copper Mountain exit on I70.
After a an hour of light rain, the weather cleared up.
Mount Holy Cross in the distance.
Kate negotiates one of many bogs.
Whew, that was close!
After 4 miles and about 2000 ft vertical, we were at about 11,600 ft and snow patches became more numerous. Thanks to a particularly snow-less winter, we were able to pick our way to our final destination of Lost Lake with little post-holing.
Lost Lake:
We camped on the south side of Lost Lake in a grassy meadow. The dogs wore themselves out chasing marmots when we arrived at camp.
Kate and Molly enjoy the view from camp.
Shaking dog fur out of the tent.
On Sunday morning we ran up to Uneva Pass to see the north side of the Gore Range. It's about a mile from Lost Lake and a pleasant walk.
Max loaded up and ready to return home.
Molly the pack dog.
Kate and Dan taking Dan's fishing pole for another hike.
Almost down!
Uneva Pass offered a great escape for Saturday night. We left the house at 3:00 Saturday and were back home at 4:00 Sunday with 11 miles, 2200 vertical feet and mountain views under our belt! Thanks to Mike and Laura for hosting a great bbq that to fill our bellies when we returned to Indian Hills.
